Installation at Franklin Furnace, New York, 1988
I Del
Mar is a multi-layed installation and artists book that explores the fantasy
of the good life by the sea. The work is centered around a San Diego suburban
development called North City West, known more affectionately by developers
as Carmel del Mar, or Del Mar Highlands. Except for the constructed images,
all photographs in the installation and artists book are taken in North City
West. The work is presented as a series of stories, generally with more than
one narrative line. The work examines dysfunctional relationships on both
the personal and the societal levels, noting the parallels between myopia,
narcissism and lack of boundaries existent in an individual family and in
the development and merchandising strategies employed in this suburban development.
