This endangered bird
lives in the cordgrass nearby. In 1983 for the first time, a winter storm
blocked the mouth of this estuary. In the following months marsh waters
became extremely salty, killing the cordgrass and leaving the clapper
rails homeless. Several years after the mouth of the estuary was reopened,
the clapper rails returned. What does it mean when a bird's survival is
dependent on human intervention?
